Why Osun Should Reject APC in 2026
By Comrade Abdul-Jeleel Samakin
The actions and decisions taken under the administration of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola will inevitably reflect on those who served closely with him. This is why the good people of Osun State will avoid making another preventable mistake in 2026.
The people of Osun State are about to decide who will govern and lead the state for the next four years. This decision is of paramount importance to every citizen of Osun, both at home and in the diaspora. Osun is about to choose who will oversee its affairs, who will provide social development, economic direction, and adequate security for its people. The responsibility before us is serious and demands careful reflection.
Setting the record straight, the administration of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola was widely criticized for mismanagement and a lack of clear direction in governance. Below are some key issues that must not be forgotten:
• Disputed Handling of Health Sector Grants
There were allegations that $20 million in grants meant for the renovation of 320 primary healthcare centres were mismanaged, with claims that selected contractors delivered substandard work. To date, there has been no satisfactory clarification on these allegations.
• Workers’ Welfare and Pension Issues
Former Governor Oyetola was a key figure in the previous administration of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola, during which civil servants were owed more than 30 months of half salaries. Unfortunately, these outstanding issues were not comprehensively resolved under Oyetola’s administration. At the time, key financial decisions were overseen by the Commissioner for Finance, Ambo who is now the APC Governorship candidate.
• Last-Minute Appointments
Shortly before handing over to Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, Oyetola faced criticism for appointing about 40 permanent secretaries and employing approximately 1,500 teachers immediately after losing his re-election bid. Many perceived these actions as attempts to complicate the transition process for the incoming administration.
• Local Government Issues
After losing the election, Oyetola conducted local government elections that were widely known as controversial and questionable because of it non compliance with the provisions of Electoral Act. These actions generated significant legal and political disputes that continue to affect the proper operation of local government system in the state.
• Controversial Appointment of Monarchs
The Oyetola administration was also accused of imposing monarchs in certain communities, allegedly favoring party loyalists. This reportedly led to communal tensions and security concerns in some areas.
• Allegations of Local Government Financial Mismanagement
There were further allegations of financial mismanagement involving local government funds, including claims of large cash withdrawals and inadequate documentation of projects. These allegations raised serious concerns about transparency and accountability.
In 2022, the people of Osun State made a decisive choice at the polls. Many believed that the issues highlighted above reflected fundamental weaknesses in Oyetola's administration.
Now, the political actors from that era are seeking another opportunity despite their woeful performance while in office.
Munirudeen Oyebanji, popularly known as AMBO, served as Commissioner for Finance under the administration of former Governor Oyetola. As Finance Commissioner, he played a significant role in the fiscal management and financial decisions of that government. It is reasonable to state that major financial policies and approvals passed through his office.
Leadership is about accountability. When an administration is criticized for its financial and governance decisions, those who held key positions within it must also be scrutinized.
Osun is a state of enlightened and intellectually conscious citizens. The choice before the people in 2026 will be guided by memory, accountability, and a clear vision for sustainable development.
