EDITORIAL: Standing Tall Under Pressure – Gov.Ademola Adeleke’s Loyalty to the People Over Politics By: Olayemi Iyiola
In a time when defections, betrayals, and political horse-trading have sadly become the norm in Nigerian politics, the recent rumour that Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke was being coerced into defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) shook the political atmosphere of Osun State like thunder on a dry day.
Within the last 72 hours, anxiety rippled across the length and breadth of Osun State. Politicians whispered in uncertainty. Civil servants and retirees grew apprehensive. Youths, professionals, and artisans alike pondered what would become of their collective dreams and faith if the one man who had dared to listen, to act, and to lead, *the "People’s Governor",* were to join a party whose past performance left many scars in the hearts of Osun citizens.
But in the face of that moment of tension, Governor Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke stood firm. With a calm voice and a resolute spirit, he issued a public declaration, refuting the speculations and reaffirming his loyalty to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and more importantly, to the good people of Osun State.
*"I remain part and parcel of the PDP family. I am not defecting to any party,"* the Governor stated unequivocally.
That single statement, though brief, carried the weight of generations. It meant that Osun would continue under people-centered leadership. It meant the hopes of thousands who had seen light at the end of the tunnel under Adeleke's leadership would not be dashed. And above all, it reminded us that there is still at least one politician in Nigeria whose ambition does not outweigh his conscience.
*The Temptation to Defect: A Calculated Trap:*
Let us speak plainly, there was real pressure. Very-very real and concrete one for that matter. The obvious fact that some Osun State APC "gladiators" are influencing some Federal Government Institutions, particularly the CBN, to withhold Local Government allocation as political bait and armtwisting was not a baseless conspiracy. It was a calculated move, suspected by many political observers, aimed at weakening Governor Adeleke’s administration and forcing his hand toward the APC.
This tactic of starving a state of critical funds to enforce political submission, has become an insidious weapon in Nigeria’s political playbook. And in such circumstances, any Governor, no matter how beloved, might consider capitulation, just to "survive" or "buy peace." But not the resolute Governor Adeleke.
*Adeleke: An Uncommon Politician in a Common Era:*
The real value of this moment isn't simply that Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke remained in the PDP.
It lies in what that decision says about his values. The values of choosing the people over political convenience.
He chose legacy over short-term gain.
He chose integrity over manipulation.
In a political landscape filled with careerists who switch parties like changing garments, Governor Ademola Adeleke reminds us that political courage is still possible. He has again demonstrated that leadership, at its core, is about conviction, not coercion; integrity, not opportunism; sacrifice, not selfishness.
Even in the face of potential federal institution strangulation and financial arm-twisting, he walked the hard road, alone, if necessary, with the people, and God Almighty behind him.
*The People Have Spoken Loudly:*
The reaction from the people of Osun State, and beyond, has been overwhelming and affirming. Joy, relief, and renewed vision filled the air once the press release, delivered by his astute Spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, was made public.
From towns and villages to the diaspora, from party loyalists to apolitical citizens, people celebrated what they unanimously saw as a heroic, people-first decision.
Some described Governor Ademola Adeleke as a “leader who listens, who feels our pulse, and who never forgets where he came from.” Others called him “a rare politician who understands that the people are the party, not just the platform.”
Even citizens who had grown disillusioned with Nigeria’s political class saw in him a flicker of hope again, an evidence that not all leaders are ruled by desperation or ambition.
*A Word to the Federal Authorities:*
We cannot, and must not, ignore the troubling implications of using Local Government funds as a political thumb screw.
Such a move is not just anti-democratic; it is economic hostage-taking. It erodes the principles of federalism and undermines the autonomy of the states. The Local Government system is the closest governance tier to the grassroots, starving it of funds is a direct attack on the Nigerian people.
This strategy must be condemned in the strongest terms. It is time for the Federal Government to rise above partisan politics and prioritize the collective well-being of the citizens.
The Osun masses and the entire world have watched Governor Ademola Adeleke's leadership journey closely. He has been described as a beacon, not just a Governor. And if there's one thing that continues to ring true, it’s that he is not a politician for himself, he is a servant for the people. In the face of enormous pressure, he did not bow.
He chose principle over politics.
He chose peace over panic.
He chose Osun over opportunism.
And for this, we commend him deeply.
Governor Adeleke has proven, once again, that true leadership is not about what you can gain, but about what you are willing to give up for the greater good.
May his courage be a torchlight for others in positions of authority, across states, across nations, across parties, and across generations.
In Osun State today, Governor Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke stands not just as a Governor, but as a symbol of political maturity, democratic resilience, and the Omoluabi ethos. He is, truly, a man of the people, and the people have spoken.
Long live Osun State. Long live people-first governance. Long live Governor Ademola Adeleke.
