A new survey has revealed growing public resentment in Osun State against the Federal Government and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, over the continued seizure of local government allocations. The report, released by Geopolitical Survey International, GSI, indicated that many residents consider the action as illegal, unconstitutional, and detrimental to grassroots development. The survey, conducted between August 1 and 5, 2025, sampled 10,000 respondents across nine federal constituencies in the state. The respondents comprised 60 per cent women and 40 per cent men, drawn from Osogbo, Ile Ife, Ikirun, Iragbiji, Iwo, Ila Orangun, Ikire, Ejigbo, Ede, Ilesa, Odeomu, Ilobu, Esa Oke, Ipetumodu, and Kuta. According to the findings, “women are the most affected by the crisis, with 84 per cent of respondents identifying them as bearing the heaviest brunt. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called on the Federal Government to immediately release statutory allocations due to local government councils in Osun State, describing the withholding of the funds as unconstitutional and a violation of judicial pronouncements. In a strongly worded letter addressed to the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, the NBA urged President Bola Tinubu’s administration to end what it termed “a dangerous precedent” that undermines the rule of law and weakens democratic institutions. The Association referenced Section 162 of the 1999 Constitution, which guarantees the financial autonomy of local governments, and warned that continued withholding of the funds constitutes an affront to clear judgments of both the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun state has urged Osun indigenes and residents to participate actively in the continuous voters’ registration exercise that commences nationwide today, calling it “a critical civic responsibility”.
