Bye 2020, The Year Of The Corona. By: Blessing Adegbite

Image
I know it’s been a hard year, but not everyone wished that 2020 were deleted from his or her calendar of life. It’s been a mixed bag of blessings, sorrows, strides and fears, of winners, whiners and losers. On the mathematical scale, 2020 is a year with patterns and no rules. On January 1, 2020, it was the Pacific island nations of Tonga, Samoa and Kiribati that first ushered in the New Year. They probably did without a shaman telling them it would be hard. By the time it was spiritual Nigeria’s turn, Australians had overused the New Year and were getting ready to sleep. The people in the Canadian capital, Ottawa were left to pick up the remnants. Life is not fair, imagine a first world nation like Canada having to eat the leftover of a wannabe nation like Nigeria and there’s nothing a handsome Justin Trudeau could do about it even if he wished. On a personal note, this was the year lovely Yemi, our eldest daughter made us proud glam parents (yes, you read that right). That means we w...

Mexico was the deadliest country, with eight killed. “Links between drug traffickers and politicians remain, and journalists who dare to cover these or related issues continue to be the targets of barbaric murders,” said the report. None of the Mexico killings...

After Asuu Strike 2020: Things To Note About The Strike And What Necessitated The Strike

Image
The Academic Staff Union of Universities have finally called off their 9 month-long strike. The Federal Government and ASUU reached an agreement which the later announced that it would be monitoring to see if there is compliance to said agreement. The ASUU strike has kept Nigerian students at home for a majority of this year. Even when the Covid 19 restrictions were lifted, students could not go back to school because the Government had not gotten to an agreement with ASUU at the time. Now that the Union has called off the strike, there seems to be an imminent round of Covid 19 restrictions as a result of the second wave.  on the 9th of March,2020. Due to Government failure to act, a total strike commenced. Total, comprehensive and definite strike started on 23rd March 2020. The plan to end the strike was taken after the 9th meeting between ASUU-FG on 22nd December. The strike was called off on 23rd December 2020. The strike started on 23rd of March and ended on 23rd of December 2020 r...

Ile Ife is the cradle of humanity - Prof. Wole Soyinka

Image
PROF. WOLE SOYINKA: “The reality is that Kabiesi, the Ooni of Ife is above all, Ile Ife is the cradle of humanity. We know what we know; we know what we accept and believe and that remains the fact…I don’t want you (Ooni) to spend any time or energy at all responding to counter or alternative theories. It is not necessary. The influence of the Ooni and Ile Ife as the cradle of mankind transcended this region. Ife monarch was recognized and referred above other Obas outside the shores of Nigeria. If you walk on the street of Cuba or Brazil, somebody will tap you on your shoulder because they know you are black, they say ‘who are you?’ And you say ‘I am Osun, Ogun, Sango’. At the end, they will ask you how is the Ooni? It means the Yoruba race, culture is beyond this environment.”
