THE APC GOVERNMENT'S LEGACY OF FAILURE: By Aare Amerijoye
Earlier this month, I dined with a group of friends. Nine of us gathered around the table, deeply engaged in a conversation about Nigeria's current state. Among us was an associate professor and a banker, fervent supporters of the APC, who couldn't resist extolling the virtues of the APC government. They claimed that since coming to power in 2015, the APC had outperformed the PDP's sixteen-year rule. Their assertion was met with a chorus of chuckles and bursts of laughter. We unanimously agreed that the APC had indeed "outperformed" the PDP—albeit in the reverse order.
Unperturbed by our reactions, they proceeded to argue that the APC had kept all its promises. One of us promptly interjected, questioning whether the spread and distribution of poverty, hunger, and suffering were part of those promises. The APC's repeated but unfulfilled promises to revive the Nigerian refineries were cited as a prime example. Each year, new deadlines were set, and each year, those deadlines passed without progress. The APC's flip-flop policies, soaring poverty, and unemployment rates have cemented Nigeria's status as the poverty capital of the world. Richard Wright once said, "Men can starve from a lack of self-realisation as much as they can from a lack of bread." Under the APC, Nigerians face both: a dearth of self-realisation and a dearth of bread.
I quipped that adults retreating into a childlike world of fantasy is a disconcerting sight. Under the APC, Nigeria flounders in a vast sewage of corruption, resource mismanagement, and political malfeasance. Each day brings new revelations of economic mismanagement and erratic policies. The APC has transformed into a predatory party, spreading poverty through mismanagement, primitive accumulation, and outright venality, with crime proliferating unchecked. Arlene Raven's assertion that "Art can play a pivotal role in activism and awareness" parallels the APC's transformation of governance into an art form—an art of deception and failure.
Despite our friend's silence, it was evident that he wasn't swayed by the truth of our arguments but chose to remain mute, unable to deploy further propaganda typical of the APC and its sympathisers. Martin Luther King Jr. wisely noted, "Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere." The APC's governance is a monumental injustice that threatens the very fabric of Nigerian society.
Reflecting on the past PDP government, it's clear that despite its imperfections, it provided a more stable and hopeful environment for Nigerians. The PDP focused on building infrastructure, creating jobs, and fostering a sense of national unity. In contrast, the APC's tenure has been marked by divisiveness, economic hardship, and a blatant disregard for the welfare of the people. Joyce Brothers said, "Trust your hunches. They're usually based on facts filed away just below the conscious level." The facts of the APC's failures are now glaringly evident, having surfaced from beneath the veneer of their promises.
Aristotle's insight that "The whole is more than the sum of its parts" is particularly relevant here. The APC's failures are a grotesque mosaic that far exceeds the sum of its individual acts of misgovernance. The cumulative effect of their policies has plunged Nigeria into a state of unprecedented despair and disillusionment.
Obafemi Awolowo aptly stated, "The children of the poor you failed to train will never let your children have peace." The APC's neglect has sown seeds of discontent that will haunt future generations. The current hardships, suffering, and miseries under the APC rule underscore the urgent need for a government that truly serves the people, not one that excels in the art of failure.
While the APC government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has spectacularly failed in its promises, the PDP's past governance stands as a beacon of relatively better management and hope. The Nigerian people deserve a government that prioritises their well-being, fosters economic growth, and unites the nation. It is time to acknowledge the monumental failure of the APC and strive for a future where the principles of good governance and justice prevail.
