Opinion: Who Still Cares To Respect Nigeria, As More Reasons Revealed

 incident that happened over a month ago in Indonesia, where a viral video in which a Nigerian diplomat in Indonesia was being physically assaulted by Indonesian immigration officials, not only summarizes the narrative about Nigeria’s dwindling fortunes in the international diplomatic community; but represents also, the zenith of disrespect her citizens now suffer globally. In that video, three Indonesians were seen holding down the unnamed diplomat in a car- on the neck and legs, while another person was recording the incident. As his head was being violently held in the back seat of a moving vehicle and an Indonesian was yelling at him, the Nigerian was shouting repeatedly, “My neck, I can’t breathe”, a cry reminiscent of the George Floyd incident of 2020. In the year 2021, as Nigeria attains the age of 61 this Friday October, there is absolutely nothing to celebrate by Nigerians, rather, it is time to be sober and reflect on the situation in which we have found ourselves; with the present insecurity, economic woe and tribal agitations as well as calls for self-determination across the country, it is obvious that all is not well with the nation. The faults should be laid at the doorsteps of our past and present leaders who failed to live up to expectations and see themselves as national leaders rather than parochial, sectional or nepotistic champions. It is with deepest sense of sincerity and patriotism that we should accept that Nigeria is already a failed nation at 61years and there is absolutely nothing to celebrate.
